This week's outages: what happened and what we changed

By Fran ·

BoomBang went down several times this week, and we know how frustrating that is.

Even more so with Halloween, The Swamp and The Thaw underway. Here is what happened, what we did and what it means for your account.

What happened

A server part failed. The network card of the machine that runs BoomBang disconnected by itself several times: on September 30 and again on Sunday, October 4, the last time for more than an hour. The server stayed on but had no internet connection, so nobody could get into the game. The only way to bring it back is to restart the machine.

Then the game froze twice. On Sunday afternoon, with the server already back, the game stopped responding twice and we had to restart it. While looking into it, we found several accounts using automated programs to enter and leave islands non-stop: hundreds of thousands of times in two weeks.

What we did

  • A limit on room changes. You can now change rooms up to 20 times per minute. A very active player does fewer than 2, so you will not notice it. If you ever go over the limit, your click will do nothing for a few seconds.
  • Automatic start. If the server restarts, the game now starts again by itself, without waiting for someone on the team to do it by hand. This keeps outages shorter.
  • The faulty part. We are working with the data center to replace the part that keeps disconnecting.
  • If the game freezes again, we are ready to see exactly where it gets stuck and fix it.

Did I lose anything?

The database kept working the whole time: your items, coins and badges are safe. If something you did right when the outage hit was not saved (a purchase, a trade, a reward), message us on Discord with your keko name and we will look into it.

Thank you for your patience. Halloween, The Swamp and The Thaw collections are still on. See you on the island.
